Bird of Paradise- The Making!

"Choices are the hinges of Destiny"

Bird of Paradise (Landing Menu)

A little over 4 months, we started developing Bird of Paradise- our first of the mini series leading up to our flagship, Paperplanes. It is our first visual novel game set to release on multiple platforms like Steam, Epic Game Store, Playstore, Itch.io and App Store.

Before we get into it, a little bit about Paperplanes.  Paperplanes is a third person action adventure game set in the future after a climate crisis. It is still in development and it will be for a while. So while we are at it, we thought- why not make a small series of games that give you guys a preview of some of the game mechanics that you can expect in Paperplanes. The stories in each of these mini games are of the same thematic elements that have inspired the storyline of Paperplanes. Bird of Paradise is the first of many to come and we hope you guys like it:)

Set in the backdrop of an industrial catastrophe- The Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984, you step into the shoes of 2 characters Jheel and Agneya and uncover fragments of their past through conversations and an Adaptive Scoring. Jheel is a young lawyer who meets Agneya, a young doctor while he is working on the hospital premises in the area affected by The Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Jheel is representing the corporations that are accused of causing the tragedy, while Agneya is volunteering to help the victims. In between dates- both court and dinner, love blossoms between them only for them to split a few years later.

Every presented choice has a hidden score which reflects the bias inherent in the choice and ever so slightly impacts the connection between Jheel and Agneya. But these small impacts accumulate and eventually determine the fate of Jheel and Agneya. But there is a catch! These hidden scores are not fixed and adapt depending upon your playstyle and the choices you make along.

Every choice you make affects the State of mind and the Relationships of the characters who seem to have the same goal- Save the life of something that is very dear to them. Each choice has an impact on the emotional state of not only the character from whose perspective the choice is being made but other involved characters too. Some emotional states lead to points of return and therefore the player needs to continuously track the emotional states of various characters and adapt their choices to avoid straying too far from the primary goal or points of no return.

But as you explore the storyline more and meet new characters you realise there is something more than what meets the eye. People aren't what they say they are and deeds of the past do in fact cast deeper shadows. As the game progresses you realise that there is a story that runs deeper than the incident that brought them together.

You piece together the story of their past through a linear storyline and explore the interconnected web of relationships that contribute to their story.

We will be releasing documentation and talking more about the gameplay and the art of the game in the upcoming posts! Stay tuned!
